The Young Australian Democrats say, if you are young, you have 10 good reasons to vote Democrats this election – 10 of our Victorian candidates are under 27. That’s roughly one-third of all candidates.
Young people are turning to the Democrats because we offer a fresh voice of reason in politics. This is the new face of the Democrats – young, energetic and determined to ensure that the party lives on to continue its fight for justice, democracy and human dignity.
Young people are grossly under-represented in Parliament - despite young Democrat parliamentarians, like Natasha Stott Despoja, making a real difference in politics.
We know young people are sick of the conservative and divisive policies of the majors and see the Greens as single-issue. They want a party of reason and compassion – and that’s the Democrats.
We’re calling for a national strategy on youth suicide. Australia has the highest youth suicide rates in the world, and yet precious little is being done about it.
We want compulsory sex education and condom-vending machines in all schools – including Catholic and private schools – as well as a campaign to stomp out homophobia.
And young people should have the right to vote in elections, and we must let them play a greater role in government decision-making – through a youth advisory council.
The young Democrats candidates asked 16- and 17-year-olds at Federation Square to cast their vote for the election. The ballot papers will be sent to the Australian Electoral Commission.
