Twice a year Senators are given the opportunity to examine the operations of government by scrutinising the estimates of proposed annual expenditure by government departments.
Known generally as Estimates, these two periods play a major role in holding the government accountable as we are able to probe exactly where and how the the money is being spent. Naturally, the Democrats relish this opportunity and have always asked the hard questions.
During the recent Senate Estimates, Senator Allison asked questions on the following issues:
requesting more specific details, including how the topics were determined, what the terms of reference will be, and how the outcomes will be communicated and enacted
In the remaining few months of our terms, the Democrats will continue asking the 'inconvenient questions' in the Senate. We also look forward to the next Estimates in May.
