Voluntary Student Unionism: silencing the student voice
VSU represents an ideological attack on student representation and advocacy. It has shredded not just student politics but also welfare, sports and recreation and a host of other services.
A university should offer a rich and diverse experience that goes beyond just getting an academic qualification. Student advocacy and representation provides an important service to students and gives them an opportunity to become active and engaged citizens.
The Australian Democrats campaigned hard against this legislation. Despite our efforts, the legislation was passed. Now we favour the repeal of the VSU legislation as soon as there is a change of government.
