No case has been made for the United States, let alone Australia, to go to war against Iraq, the Leader of the Australian Democrats Senator Andrew Bartlett said today.
"There is no single charge against Iraq that cannot be made against a number of other countries," Senator Bartlett said.
Democrats' Foreign Affairs spokesperson Senator Natasha Stott Despoja said the evidence should be judged by the United Nations Security Council rather than having the United States as judge and jury.
"The United States administration has long ceased to pursue the disarmament of Iraq and now appears to be seeking a justification to go to war," Senator Stott Despoja said.
"The Australian Government has handed to the United States the decision on whether Australia participates in an illegal war where weapons of mass destruction could be used," Senator Bartlett said.
"The Democrats will today again question the Minister for Defence in the Parliament about the commitment the Australian Government has made to participate in an illegal war on Iraq.
"The Democrats fear Australia will be at war before the Senate sits again in March," Senator Bartlett concluded.
