The Democrats' Immigration spokesperson, Senator Andrew Bartlett, has welcomed a unanimous report by the Parliament's Committee on Migration, which has validated the essential and beneficial role that migrant workers play, while recommending a range of improvements to protect the rights and safety of migrant workers.
"The Democrats share concerns about the minority of unscrupulous employers who have seriously exploited some migrants working under the 457 Visa program," Senator Bartlett said.
"Exploitation of vulnerable migrants must stop, and there must be rigorous enforcement of proper workplace standards, including health and safety issues."
"However, concerns about exploitation should not be used to attack migration programs or to justify winding back immigration."
"Australia's economy, social services and dynamism relies heavily on the continuing contribution of migrants, including those who initially come here on long-term temporary visas."
"We must improve the effectiveness of 457 visas, not use shortcomings with the scheme as an excuse to wind it back."
"We are still falling short of the mark on adequate and efficient skills assessment, which prevents a fair go for migrants and can risk the safety of people in the Australian community."
"I welcome this Committee's cooperative approach which has produced a unanimous, constructive report on a politically contentious issue," Senator Bartlett concluded.
