HOWARD MUST DUMP THE TOXIC NUCLEAR PLAN
The Prime Minister must categorically rule out the construction of nuclear power stations following his Environment Minister’s comments today that the plants “may” never be built.
“The PM’s got cold feet on nuclear and today dispatched his Environment Minister to spread the news. But is this a core or non-core promise? Having wasted our time and money the PM now gives himself a bob each way on nuclear power as a blatant vote buying exercise. But do not forget John Howard, George Bush and a few rich business mates have been cheerleading for a toxic nuclear future despite the clear message that Australians don’t want a nation littered with nuclear reactors”.
On the eve of an election the Prime Minister unsuccessfully tried to deal himself into climate change solutions during last night’s Leaders Debate pledging funds to assist low income earners facing higher electricity bills as a result of clean energy development.
“This lot have been forced to accept the realities of climate change, but do so kicking and screaming”
Senator Allison said. “There is only one solution to big cuts in greenhouse for electricity production and it is renewables. Wind has already proved itself, household PV units could satisfy peak load demand and there is enormous scope for geo and solar thermal energy production. Instead of wasting money chasing ‘clean’ coal (which would require power stations to be rebuilt) the money should be spent on keeping the innovation in Australia and investing in big scale renewable generators. I hope it doesn’t take another 11 years for whoever wins Government to figure this out”.
