Australian Democrats Continue Rebuilding with New Policy Development
As part of the rebuilding process, the Australian Democrats have announced a new policy development process.
The refined policy development process will use online tools and working groups of ordinary members to develop policy that will then be put to a ballot of the full membership to become official party policy. The Australian Democrats are the only significant party in Australia to empower ordinary members to be involved at every stage in the policy development process and vote on all policy.
Policy working groups will be coordinated by policy stream coordinators who are knowledgeable people on the issue and in most cases will also act as the public spokesperson for the party on their policy issue. Applications for the policy stream coordinator roles are now being sought from suitably qualified and eligible members of the Australian Democrats.
The party will also engage the broader community in a long series of policy surveys to be conducted over coming months. Each week new policy surveys will be launched online that will be used by the policy working groups to help inform their discussions and decisions. Links to these surveys will be available on the Democrats website at www.democrats.org.au/surveys.
Since April and the launch of its rebuilding efforts, the party has experienced double-digit growth in membership, new donors and a sharp increase in renewals. New member engagement tools, events, and public outreach programs are in development for roll-out in the coming months.
The Australian Democrats are committed to challenging the political landscape through inspired and insightful policy which will be developed through this open and inclusive process.
