"Adopt-a-Dem" allows less fortunate applicants to have membership fee covered by fellow members.
The Australian Democrats have launched Adopt-a-Dem, a new program that allows more fortunate members to sponsor the membership fees for those interested in joining as new members, but are struggling financially.
The initiative comes at an important time for the party: The Australian Democrats have shown double-digit membership growth over the past four months, but are looking to improve on that in order to run an effective campaign for a return to Parliament and the power it held for decades.
"The Australian Democrats have always been inclusive and compassionate. It's important than anyone that wants to contribute to the political process can do so – regardless of their finances," stated Julia Melland, National President of the Australian Democrats.
In May, the party lowered its standard registration fee to $25/year, with a special rate of $10 for studens and pensioners. Those interested in sponsoring the membership of an applicant can do so for $10 a member.
"We're very hopeful that Adopt-a-Dem will bring new, motivated activists to the party. We're in a stronger position than we've been in quite a while, and this will only add to our momentum." Ms Melland said.
Adopt-a-Dem is an initiative of the aggressive rebuild of the Australian Democrats that began in April of this year. For more information on Adopt-a-Dem, visit www.democrats.org.au
