The Australian Democrats are continuing their rebuild efforts by initiating a nationwide candidate recruitment effort, looking for outstanding men and women interested in running as candidates for both state and federal offices.
The formal nomination process for the Senate is currently open in all states and territories. Nominations for the House of Representatives and state positions will open over the next months as determined by state executives. The nomination process for the South Australian and Tasmanian State elections are also open.
In an email to members and supporters, candidates from the business and non-profit world were made welcome.
"Political experience is not essential. We're looking for people with intelligence, empathy, vision, good communications skills, and a commitment to the ideals we fight for," stated Julia Melland, National President of the Australian Democrats.
"The Democrats are seeking the best candidates and see no reason to limit the pool to those currently within the party.
"We do have a number of outstanding people we want to put forward. We also recognise there are many talented individuals who share our philosophy outside the organisation. I invite them to step forward.
The party's rebuilding efforts are beginning to show momentum. In the past six months, the party's membership base has increased considerably, new donors have emerged, and its internal infrastructure is being built out with the appointment of new policy coordinators and the recent addition of a National Campaign Director.
"Candidate recruitment is an important piece of the puzzle. The right person can alter the dynamics of a race - and put us in a very competitive position," Melland said.
