The Australian Democrats have announced their upper house candidates for the upcoming South Australian State elections on March 20, 2010.
The ticket will be headed up by Jeanie Walker. Born and raised in the Fleurieu Peninsula, Ms Walker has firsthand experience of the challenges facing rural Australians. She has a real commitment to helping those who care for children with disabilities, and a passionate interest in local issues of every kind.
The Democrats' election ticket was described yesterday by Sky News as 'a bit of a surprise'. Ms Walker responded, 'It's not a surprise at all. The Democrats may have been written off by some, but we are most definitely back. We are in the process of a national rebuild. It's vital that the government is held to account, and that people's voices are really heard in the parliaments of Australia. We believe the Democrats can deliver that.'
Ms Walker added, 'Those who say the Democrats are dead - are dead wrong.'
Tom Salerno, a self-confessed 'sports nut' with a deep interest in reforming health policy in Australia, and former South Australian Democrats leader and Parliamentarian, Sandra Kanck, will be backing up Ms Walker's bid for a seat in the State Parliament.
National President of the Australian Democrats, Julia Melland, strongly endorsed the South Australian Team saying the rest of the party will be doing what they can to help the campaign. 'We're working really hard to rebuild the party and all Democrats know that a win would really help boost that effort. Jeanie Walker will make a great parliamentarian and has a real passion for making a difference - a passion that South Australia's current leaders are clearly lacking.'
