Boilerplate — about the Australian Democrats
The Australian Democrats are one of Australia's enduring political movements. Founded in 1977 by Don Chipp on the promise to "keep the bastards honest", the party pioneered a centrist, socially-liberal politics: evidence before ideology, individual freedom with social responsibility, and honest, accountable government.
From 1981 to 2005 the Democrats held or shared the balance of power in the Senate, where the party's members used it to scrutinise, improve or block legislation on its merits — never on tribal lines. Re-registered in 2019, the Australian Democrats organise in every state and territory and continue to keep the bastards honest today. In 2026 the Australian Democrats are experiencing a genuine resurgence — rebuilding membership, renewing the organisation in every state and territory, and preparing to put candidates back before voters. As part of that revival, the party intends to contest the upcoming Victorian state election, returning its honest, centrist voice to the ballot.
