Dirty coal, dirty tricks

It appears, at least in Queensland, that coal-fired generators are manipulating power production in order to drive costs down to zero at times in order to put large scale solar plants out of business.

This lose/lose strategy has been described in RenewEconomy as a Mexican standoff to see who goes broke first

We really need more wind, storage, including more pumped hydro, and greater investment in concentrated solar thermal which can take advantage of the shoulder peak periods.  

One thing is for sure – this stoush is not helping in the urgent need to transform the nation’s power to renewable energy and the Australian Energy Regulator should step in before investment in clean energy dries up altogether.
